From Slippers to Success

Michael's journey into F1 photography began in Azerbaijan 2018, when he arrived so last-minute that he covered the entire race weekend in slippers (yes, really). But what cemented his passion for F1 photography was capturing the now-infamous collision between then-teammates Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen - a pivotal moment that Michael believes changed the trajectory of Ricciardo's career at Red Bull.

"Having that moment, that brilliant piece of action that no one else caught, was kind of infectious," Michael shared. "Going back into the media center that afternoon, knowing that you've got the shot - that was the feeling that I really wanted to recreate, week in, week out."

The Red Bull Rookie Rollercoaster

The 2024 season has already delivered major drama with the Red Bull driver swap between Liam Lawson and Yuki Tsunoda. Michael gave us the behind-the-scenes perspective on the paddock tensions, describing the stark difference in how Helmut Marko and Christian Horner engaged with the two drivers.

"Both of them were next to Yuki, both of them giving him advice," Michael noted of Yuki's first race weekend back in the car. "It was interesting to see that there was much more involvement from both of those in Yuki."

Lewis at Ferrari: A Match Made in Motorsport Heaven

The buzz around Lewis Hamilton's move to Ferrari has been electric, and Michael believes it just feels right.

"This one just feels like the Formula One story coming to an apex," he told us. "Lewis' look, his image is outstanding. And Charles as well, there's a very nice balance between the two - Charles's white helmet, Lewis' yellow. Both of them are Ferrari colors."

Michael predicts the excitement will reach new heights at Imola: "When we go to Imola, it's going to explode. That's going to be such a big race with the Tifosi."

The Cadillac Bombshell: Checo's Next Move?

In a juicy exclusive that you're hearing first from Milkshake, Michael dropped a bombshell about Sergio Perez's future: "I heard that he had already signed for Chev, but I don't know if my source is 100% accurate."

Michael believes Checo would be a perfect fit for the new Cadillac team entering F1: "He comes with oodles of money and lots of experience. And I think people are now realizing that he wasn't as bad as that Red Bull made him look."

As for who might join Perez at Cadillac? Michael suggested American IndyCar stars Colton Herta or Pato O'Ward could be in the running, with O'Ward bringing "an absolutely massive following in Mexico." Michael noted that if they go with Checo, "they've got to go for someone who's a bit younger and with a bit of personality. I think they need to be a bit risky with that second seat."

The Rising Stars to Watch

We couldn't help but ask which rookies are standing out this season. Michael's top pick? Kimi Antonelli.

"He looks like he belongs already. I'm completely amazed by that kid. He has so much energy, so much personality, and it's uninhibited," Michael said, praising Antonelli's phenomenal drive in Australia.

But in a bold prediction that you heard here first, Michael believes Gabriel Bortoleto - despite currently being in a struggling Sauber - might ultimately be the standout of this rookie class: "There's something special about him that I haven't seen for a long time."

shooting pheasants or I could be driving racing cars."

Behind the Lens: The Stories Behind the Shots

We couldn't let Michael go without diving into the stories behind some of his most memorable shots. In an exclusive photo series breakdown, Michael revealed what was happening behind the scenes in seven iconic moments:

  • The F1 Driver Class Photo: "We weren't supposed to photograph that," Michael confessed. After sneaking in, he witnessed 20 minutes of fidgeting drivers eager to escape. "Max and Charles had a lot of time chatting to each other. Kimi was just sitting there grinning like a Cheshire cat. It was the best day ever."
  • Lando's First Win Celebration with Parents: A tender moment when Lando rushed straight to his parents after his Australian GP win. "His dad is hilarious. He's one of the funniest guys around," Michael shared, noting he sees Lando's dad at almost every race.
  • Kimi and Lewis Together: Michael captured a heartwarming press conference moment revealing their special bond. "Lewis was so excited and had so much admiration for Kimi. It was beautiful seeing this older driver praising this younger driver, giving him so much support and encouragement."
  • McLaren's 1-2 Finish in Shanghai: Michael praised Zak Brown's leadership while noting one amusing observation: "If there's one negative about the two McLaren drivers, it's that they're not the best celebrators. They need to learn how to punch the air and jump around a bit more."
  • Lewis's First Sprint Win at Ferrari: "Lewis was so happy. To get a win, any win in your second race with a team, that's really good," Michael recalled, noting how the joy mirrored Lewis's first-ever race win.
  • Jack Doohan's Terrifying Crash: A sobering moment where Michael described the fear he felt watching Jack's car after the accident at Suzuka. "It took a really long time for him to get out. Normally you'd see the headrest coming off or some movement. I didn't see anything."
  • Racing Bulls' Surprise Welcome for Liam: After Liam's demotion from Red Bull, his return to Racing Bulls featured a touching surprise. "The moment he turned around the corner and saw everyone, his hands went to his face and he had genuine surprise and happiness," Michael said, believing this shows Liam will bounce back.
